SIGN UP FOR AMAZON PRIME

If you had to guess, what are the most likely targets for board game deals during Amazon Prime day 2020? If we had to guess, we think it is going to be bigger and better than it has ever been.

History of Prime Day

Prime day was just a little promotional stunt launched in 2015 to coincide with Amazon’s 20th Anniversary celebration. The goal was a lofty one but they wanted to see if they could take a bite out of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. Oh boy did they, the event was a massive success. The deals on Amazon categories are the absolute lowest they will ever be and third-party sellers have wanted to jump on the promotion train. Every year the event makes a bigger and bigger splash and tin 2020 for the first time they have expanded the event to 2 days.

Did COVID-19 Change Prime Day 2020

Yes, the event is normally in the summer and about half of a year aways from Black Friday / Cyber Monday. Prime Day 2015 was July 15th, Prime Day 2016 was July 12th, Prime Day 2017 was July 10th, Prime Day 2018 was July 16th and Prime Day 2019 was July 15th. Given where things were early in the year, the entire event was pushed. Time was needed to get back to usual but also be far enough away from the 2020 holiday season.

Has The Board Game Industry Changed in Any Way That Would Effect Prime Day 2020

Short answer no, but we know everything is different now. Board Games went through an interesting trend in 2020. First, in March, when people were looking at quarantining lightly and then seriously, people were looking for the type of activity board games provided and popularity surged. In late summer, people were rethinking interacting with people and board games fell a bit to the wayside. This is just normal ebbs and flows so no real change to the industry here.

Cons like Gen Con or PAX are no longer marquee events that bring people to the tabletop in droves, but online affairs that have less popularity and fewer effects. These were always big announcements and sales opportunities and without them, publishers are looking for new ways to reach the audience. What is a better opportunity than the biggest online sales event of the year. If anything, publishers having less connection with humans is going to benefit you the consumer because instead of making a meaningful connection with you, they will have to rely on hitting you over the head with a deal.

This is not something that will most likely affect Prime Day 2020 board game deals but shout out to Board Game Cafes. With the pandemic, they are all hurting. It was so sad to see the success story of the board game cafe, with rapid growth and popularity only to see them hit with something that REALLY affects them (not being able to interact in close proximity). They haven’t quite had the effect on overall board game sales yet that they absolutely will have 5 to 10 years from now.
