February 11, 2021 – Another high profile board game to television adaption is coming. An animated Clue TV series is in the works at Hasbro. There are no details on the plot yet but the initial building blocks are being pushed into place. Clue is being co-produced by Fox Entertainment, eOne and Bento Box Entertainment, which also will serve as the animation studio. Bento Box has been in the news lately as a cornerstone of the new Fox’s strategy, being a central developer and owner of iconic animation properties. It makes sense that they would want to put several rich iconic property deals in place.
Given how much of a cult classic and enduring hit the Clue movie from 1985 was, this could end up being amazing. Adaptions of board games have not exactly lit the world on fire, but this standout comedy certainly left its mark. It is just a whodunit murder mystery with the characters you know in an atmosphere you could believe could be transported from the game (a little serious, a little zany). All we know is this new series wants to “encapsulate the thrilling and suspenseful dynamics that have made Clue a global sensation for more than seven decades.”
This story was reported by Hollywood trade publication Deadline, and comes on the heels of another high profile adaption. Back in January of this year it was announced that a Risk tv show was in the works with the producers of House of Cards. Hasbro bought movie studio and distributor Entertainment One not too long ago and are taking great steps to ramp up their entertainment synergies.
“‘Colonel Mustard…In the Conservatory…With the lead pipe.’ By just hearing these colorful phrases alone, you immediately know what they mean — leaving no mystery as to why Clue is one of the most beloved board games-turned-IP of all time,” said Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment of Fox Entertainment. “We couldn’t be more excited to develop it as an animated series along with eOne and Bento Box.”
“We’re thrilled to team up once again with our great partners at Fox and also work with Bento Box on this exciting new series,” said Pancho Mansfield, eOne’s President of Global Scripted Programming. “Clue is an iconic whodunit property that exudes mystery and intrigue, and has fans all over the world. We can’t wait to share our reimagined animated version with audiences.”
