Catan vs Kingdomino

Verdict For the Shelf: Catan (80% of the time) and Kingdomino (20% of the time). Honestly, Catan is just one of those iconic games and if you have the choice for only one, it should get the benefit of the doubt. The only time you should really prioritize King is on number of players, it is a fantastic 2 player board game and perfect if you need that. You could argue that Kingdomino is lighter and that is a selling point, but Catan is so easy to play and pick up that you can discard that right away. You lose the exciting drafting component, but that is made up for with Catan’s trading.

Catan vs Carcassonne

Verdict For the Shelf: Very tough, both of these games are iconic classics that are basically triple platinum in the board game world. Catan (50% of the time) and Carcassonne (50% of the time). Catan gets a slight edge in gameplay, but Carcassonne gets in edge in player count versatility and you can easily pick up and play it anywhere. If you have 3 players consistently and need something to play over and over, it is probably more 75/25 Catan.

Honestly get both, it is the only way to put this to rest and not have regret in your heart. Catan is about building up and Ticket to Ride is about getting it done impressively and efficiently.

Catan vs Risk

Verdict For the Shelf: Catan (90% of the time) and Risk (10% of the time). This is going to anger people, but Risk is kind of just a novelty at this point, an iconic relic of the past with nostalgia value. If you think it is the best combat strategy game out there, you are not right, but it is ok if you like it for what it is. Catan, on the other hand, is the best at what it does and will give you a top-notch experience like no other. Risk is also though to play over and over again while Catan was built for it.

Catan vs Monopoly

Verdict For the Shelf: Catan (100% of the time) and Monopoly (0% of the time). There is no question, this is like if you had a race and you put one of the fastest runners in world up against a rock. People really like to hate on Monopoly but we are not going to do that, sure if it came out today it probably would get a C-ish rating and fade into obscurity but it earned some credit. No, this is more about how good Catan is, it is one of the best produced, versatile and beloved board games ever made. Monopoly unfortunately cannot hold a candle. You could say that Monopoly has things that you do not see in many games, which is true, but between Catan’s trading and area control, they have Monopoly covered.

Catan vs Pandemic

Verdict For the Shelf: Catan (60% of the time) and Pandemic (40% of the time). As far as gameplay goes, as well as, iconic cultural and innovation added to board game world, these two are on the same level. Where Catan pulls way ahead is in replayability. Pandemic varies a little each new game but you are still doing the same thing. It will get old far before Catan will. If, however, you like cooperative gameplay at all, Pandemic is a must play.
