Codenames launches online… finally. The renowned and widely popular party board game has finally launched online with its own portal. That’s right, the game is its own draw so instead of being on a big online platform like Tabletopia, it is going the Dominion route with its own site. Let us just put your mind at ease, it looks great and flows wonderfully.

Wait, are you unfamilar with Codenames? We can help with that –

The site, elegantly just https://codenames.game looks wonderful and is designed by the same people as the game (Czech Games) so you know they took the time to get it right and not embarrass the highly lucrative Codenames universe. It is new so right now everything is free and open. There is no cost. You click a button and you are thrown into a lobby where you can either join a game or make your own. According to the site’s FAQs you can invite up to 64 of your friends!!

That previously mentioned FAQ from the Codenames site was very helpful. We have included that useful info from Czech Games below.

How many friends can I invite to play?

You can have as many as 64 friends in one room.

How many games can I play in one room?

In one room, one game of Codenames can be played at any one moment. After it is finished, you may start a new one (or, you may cancel the game in progress by starting a new one).

Can someone join a game in progress?

Yes, people may freely join or leave during the game. They may even switch teams, or become spymasters if your original one leaves or needs a help. We are trying to reflect the options you would have around a real game table.

How many languages do you support?

In Codenames Online, we have word cards in 39 languages. The user interface is currently available only in English and Czech but we are working on translating it to more languages too.

How many people do I need to play the game?

The game requires at least four players (two per team).

Can I have more than one spymaster/operative on one team?

Yes – same as in the original board game, you can have more than one operative on your team, as well as more than one spymaster.

Can I play this browser version of Codenames on mobile phones?

Yes you can! However, since the website is still in beta, the experience is slightly better on bigger screens.

I have encountered an issue when playing Codenames Online – can you help me?

Please, contact us at [email protected] and we will do our best to help you.

Is this version official?

Yes – Codenames Online was developed by the same company that created the original Codenames, Czech Games Edition.

Is this the final version of Codenames Online?

Codenames Online is still in beta – we are working hard to improve it and will continue supporting and updating this implementation.

Overall, this is something the world needs right now and yes we say world because the language support on this puppy is big (39 languages!). This is another quality product from Czech Games so you know satisfaction is all but guaranteed. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of the situation while this is new and figuring it out.
