Spyfall Board Game

#03 | Spyfall

Spyfall makes the list of board games like A Little Wordy because it has that same kind of back and forth with escalating questions and clues. It is all about who can do the most with the information given and push things forward. This is much more colorful and a spy roll playing adventure but figuring out the overall puzzle is still the goal.

Spyfall goes multiple rounds. At the start of each round all players receive cards showing the same location — a casino, a traveling circus, a pirate ship, or even a space station — except that one player receives a card that says “Spy” instead of the location. Players then start asking each other questions — “Why are you dressed so strangely?” or “When was the last time we got a payday?” or anything else you can come up with — trying to guess who among them is the spy. For 3 – 8 players, games run about 15 minutes.

Wavelength Board Game Components

#02 | Wavelength

Wavelength makes the list of board games like A Little Wordy because it is a social guessing game in which two sides compete to read each other’s minds. Sure it is more team than individual showdown and your ability to form forms doesn’t come into play, but you are still trying to get to ultimate answers with certain limitations. A good deduction plus more game.

Teams take turns rotating a dial to where they think a hidden bullseye is located on a spectrum. One of the players on your team knows the location, draws a card with a pair of “binaries” on it (Rough – Smooth, Sad Song – Happy Song, etc) and gives a clue that is conceptually where the bullseye is located between those two binaries. After a clue is given, the team discusses where they think the bullseye is located and turns the dial to that location on that spectrum. For 2 – 12 players, games run about 30 – 45 minutes.

#01 | Decrypto

Decrypto takes the top spot on the list of board games like A Little Wordy because it has that side versus side word deduction. The idea is very similar that you have words you need to get to, the only difference is instead of the base subject matter being created by random letters it is told to you by a series of clues. The exact part of the puzzle you are trying to find is different but it is the same puzzle.

Players compete in two teams in Decrypto (white and black), with each trying to correctly interpret the coded messages of their opponent before they do the same. On each team’s personal board, there are four cards tucked into the different screens (#’d 1 – 4). The team can see these words, the opponents cannot. Each round one team member per team is the decoder and draws a card with a series of numbers (relating to the 1 – 4). They have to get their team to guess this order by giving clues, but then you are also giving clues to your opponent. For 3 – 8 players, games run 15 – 45 minutes.
