Telestrations Board Game Overview

#05 | Telestrations

Telestrations makes the list of games like Captain Sonar because it has all players frantically drawing at the same time to better achieve the same goal. Not only do you have to do your own job well but you need to interact with the other players. You have to do a good job and know your audience all against a ticking clock.

Each player begins by sketching a word dictated by the roll of a die. Time is limited by the old fashioned sand timer. When time is up all players, all at the same time, pass their sketch to the next player, who must guess what’s been drawn. Players then simultaneously pass their guess — which hopefully matches the original word — to the next player who must try to draw the word they see — and so on. For 4 – 8 players, games last about 30 minutes.

#04 | Magic Maze

Magic Maze makes the list of board games like Captain Sonar because you and your team are working together to move as one through a dangerous journey all in real-time. Different people have different jobs and they all need to play their part if you are going to end victoriously.

Each player can control any hero in order to make that hero perform a very specific action, to which the other players do not have access: Move north, explore a new area, ride an escalator… All this requires rigorous cooperation between the players in order to succeed at moving the heroes prudently. However, you are allowed to communicate only for short periods during the game; the rest of the time, you must play without giving any visual or audio cues to each other. For 1 – 8 players, games run 15 minutes.

Space Alert Board Game

#03 | Space Alert

Space Alert makes the list of board games like Captain Sonar because this is another great real-time cooperative team survival title. Instead of a commander announcing directions that everyone needs to react to, here there is a central computer that you and your team will need to worry about. Everyone must play their role if you hope to survive.

Players become crew members of a small spaceship scanning dangerous sectors of the galaxy. During play, the central computer will announce the presence of various threats and act as a game timer. The threats vary from space battleships, to monsters, to asteroids to equipment malfunctions. Players have to agree who will take care of which task and coordinate their actions in real-time to defend the ship. For 1 – 5 players, games run approximately 30 minutes.

#02 | Escape: The Curse of the Temple

Escape: The Curse of the Temple makes the list of board games like Captain Sonar because it is an exciting group game that has you working together in real-time to escape a temple before it collapses. Instead of drawing lines to move around a grid, you are rolling dice to move around a game board.

All players rolling dice and taking actions simultaneously. You must roll the right symbols to enter a room, and if you’re at an open doorway, you can roll to reveal the next tile in the stack and add it to that doorway. Some rooms contain combinations of red and blue symbols, and if you (possibly working with others) roll enough red or blue symbols, you “discover” magic gems, moving them from a separate gem depot onto that tile. For 1 – 5 players, games run a quick 10 minutes.
