Calico Board Game Play Area

#05 | Calico

Calico makes the list of board games like Cloud City because it has you working on your own personal tableau in a way where everything is an interweaving puzzle of things that go together. Sew a quilt, collect buttons, attract cats.

Each quilt has a particular pattern that must be followed, and players are also trying to create color and pattern combinations that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also able to attract the cuddliest cats. For 1 – 4 players, games run 30 – 45 minutes.

Dragon Castle Board Game

#04 | Dragon Castle

Dragon Castle makes the list of games like Cloud City because this is a pattern building and hand management game where you are bringing elements from a communal area into building your own personal area. In both games, you really need to plan according to the limited options in the middle of the table everyone needs to base decision making on.

You take a pair of identical tiles from the central “castle” (known as the Dragon Castle) and place them on your own realm board to build your own castle. From time to time, you may sacrifice these tiles to acquire shrines in their place. Every time you create a set of tiles of the same kind, you “consolidate” them, i.e. flip them face down to score points. For 2 – 4 players, games run 30 – 45 minutes.

#03 | Tiny Towns

Tiny Towns makes the list of board games like Cloud City because it is another great abstract strategy game that has you trying to make strategic groupings while fighting against the continued struggle of your tight personal play area. You have many competing resources and you need to make the right groupings in order to get points.

You are the mayor of a tiny town in the forest in which the smaller creatures of the woods have created a civilization hidden away from predators. Your town is represented by a 4×4 grid on which you will place resource cubes in specific layouts to construct buildings. Each building scores victory points in a unique way. When no player can place any more resources or construct any buildings, the game ends. For 1 – 6 players, games go for about 45 – 60 minutes.

Topiary Board Game

#02 | Topiary

Topiary makes the list of board games like Cloud City because it is the same type of game except instead of buildings, you are trying to build a luxuriant topiary. This has players all working off a communal area instead of a personal space, which does fundamentally changes the game, but it is still that puzzle inside of a management game.

Players try to position their visitors on the outer edge of a beautiful topiary garden in order to give them the best view possible. Visitors can see the closest topiary sculpture to them and any behind that, in the same sightline, that are larger. You can score bonus points for visitors who see multiple topiary sculptures of the same type. Players slowly fill in the garden by adding tiles until everyone has placed all their visitors. An easy choice for the list of best board games about trees. For 2 – 4 players, games run about 15 – 30 minutes.

Kingdomino Board Game Draft

#01 | Kingdomino

Kingdomino takes the top spot on the list of board game like Cloud City because you are facing pretty much the same kind of challenge, just with creating groups of terrain instead of clear paths in the sky. The way tiles come into your grid is the same, it is just the way those tiles are selected is slightly different.

The game uses tiles with two sections, similar to Dominoes. Every turn, each player will select a new domino to connect to their existing kingdom, making sure at least one of its sides connects to a matching terrain type in play. The order of who picks first depends on which tile was previously chosen, with better tiles forcing players to pick later in the next round. Your goal is to make touching groups of the 6 different types of terrain with as many crowns as possible. For 2 – 4 players, games run 15 – 20 minutes.
