Qin Board Game

#05 | Qin

Qin makes the list of board games like Ctrl because it is another abstract strategy title that has you placing lines of tokens, in a tight space, in an effort to outdo your opponents. This title certainly kicks the intensity up a level than the 3 easy steps of CTRL, but here you need to control areas in the grid with your tiles to place your pagodas and win.

You choose 1 of 3 tiles from your hand, place it onto the board, then draw a new tile (that shows 2 landscapes). If you create a territory that consists of at least two spaces of the same landscape, you seize it. You can expand your territories, take over territories from other players, and connect your territories to villages on the board. This enables pagodas and first player to get theirs out wins. For 2 – 4 players, games run about 30 minutes.

Hey Thats My Fish Board Game

#04 | Hey, That’s My Fish!

Hey, That’s My Fish! makes the list of board games like Ctrl because it is a simple and color path laying game that is great for the whole family. In a limited space, you are trying to secure the most out of all players. You need to expand as far as you can go but you need to think a few turns ahead so you do not get stranded.

Players want to catch as many fish as possible with their waddle of penguins. Each turn, a player moves one penguin in a straight line over hex-shaped ice tiles with 1, 2 or 3 fish on them. The player then collects the hex from where the penguin started its movement from the table, thereby creating a gap in which penguins can’t cross on future turns. When a penguin can’t move, it’s removed from play. Most fish at the end wins. For 2 – 4 players, games go about 20 minutes.

#01 | Battle Sheep

Battle Sheep takes the top spot on the list of board games like Ctrl because it utilizes so many of the same things that make it great, it is just on a 2D space and uses longer straight paths. Instead of placing 3 tokens, once you choose your lane, you go as far as it can go, maybe it is 2, maybe it is 8. The game is very much that same level of quickness and intensity where the game is very easy and very quick, it is just about you using your limited time well.

Players start the game by constructing the board from identical four-hex tiles, then each player places his/her tall stack of discs on one of the border hexes. Players take turns removing some number of discs from the top of one of their stacks, moving that new stack of discs as far away as it can go in a straight line. For 2 – 4 players, games run a quick 15 minutes each.
