Each player puts dice on fields with the matching number of pips (dots on the die) on their game sheet. At the end of each turn, the fields get marked with an “X”. This way players collect more and more “X”s on their sheets. Some fields enable special actions or provide extra points at the end of the game. The player with the most points at the end wins!

To determine this list we broke down Dizzle to what it is. This is a roll-n-write game that blends dice rolling and path building. It is light and accessible, is not quite like anything else out there and has a high level of player interaction given the genre. Azul Board Game Tile Factory
Copyright © 2019 Matt Halvorson. All Rights Reserved.

#05 | Azul

Azul is the only title on the list of games like Dizzle that is not a roll-n-write game. This great abstract strategy game gets the honor because it has similar elements of drafting (fighting over factory tiles like dice numbers) and it has elements of filling in your own board in a way that is going to help you and hopefully block your opponent. You are also making permanent decisions one after another within round after round.

The game is about helping the king decorate with Portuguese tiles. Azul is a well crafted set collection and pattern building game. You draft sets of tiles against other players in order to create strategic clusters that are going to get you big points. You need to strategically fill rows with groupings of colors in order to move them into your final square grid in order to score. For 2 – 4 players, games run about 45 minutes.

Thats So Clever Roll-N-Write

#04 | That’s Pretty Clever (aka Ganz Schön Clever)

That’s Pretty Clever makes the list of board games like Dizzle because it is another roll-n-write game that has dice rolling where your decisions not only need to benefit you, but you have to be careful to not leave a die available that is really going to help you opponent. They are also both interesting blends of numbers that are used in a non traditional way.

Choose your dice wisely to enter them into the matching colored area, put together tricky chain-scoring opportunities, and rack up the points. The dice you don’t use are as important as what you do because every die that’s smaller than the chosen one can be used by the other players, keeping everyone in the game at all times. Each colored section has its owns rules and it is up to you to fill in all sections evenly in order to prosper. For 1 – 4 players, games last about 30 minutes.

Saint Malo Board Game

#03 | Saint Malo

Saint Malo is an older title that is hard to find but that doesn’t make it any less of a fantastic choice for the list of games like Dizzle. This title is much more thematic than Dizzle, as well as any other game on this list, but it does such a great job of utilizing that re-rolling and locking mechanic that both games have in common. This adds so much dimensionality to both games and if you like one, you are bound to like the other.

In Saint Malo players roll five dice to gain various resources; combinations of dice create enhancements like characters or buildings, which can provide additional victory points, money, or special actions, such as altering the outcome of a die roll. It is a roll and write with a civilization-building theme. It is a different vein, but the same type of adventure through and through. For 2 – 5 players, games run around 45 minutes.

Qwixx Board Game

#02 | Qwixx

Qwixx makes the list of games like Dizzle because it also seems like a close descendent of Yahtzee that changed one meaningful thing to make you look at using numbers in a new way. Both games are basically themeless and rely on scoring big points while making sure your opponent does not do the same.

Each player has a scoresheet with the numbers 2-12 in rows of red and yellow and the numbers 12-2 in rows of green and blue. To score points you want to mark off as many numbers as possible, but you can mark off a number only if it’s to the right of all marked-off numbers in the same row. Similar to Twice As Clever, there is no fancy theme here, it is about the dice and the numbers and the interesting scoring combinations you can make. For 2 – 5 players, games last about 15 minutes.
