Taboo Board Game Clue

#05 | Taboo

Taboo makes the list of board games like Letter Jam because it is another great party game with communication limits. You need to give clues in order to guess words, here it just happens to be using information to find words instead of the reverse of finding clues so you can spell out words.

Players take turns describing a word or phrase on a drawn card to their partner without using five common additional words or phrases also on the card. The opposing partners watch a timer and use a buzzer to stop the game, buzz the player describing if one of the five off-limits words or phrases is used, or the describing player makes any gestures. For 4 – 10 players, games go for about 20 minutes.

Hanabi Board Game Card Components

#04 | Hanabi

Hanabi makes this list of board games like Letter Jam because this is another card game that requires deduction and subtle shifts to make proper sets. Instead of doing it with words, you just happen to be doing it with numbered firework cards to make patterns and sets.

The card deck consists of five different colors of cards, numbered 1–5 in each color. For each color, the players try to place a row in the correct order from 1–5. In this game you hold your cards so that they’re visible only to other players. To assist other players in playing a card, you must give them hints regarding the numbers or the colors of their cards. Players must act as a team to avoid errors and to finish the fireworks display before they run out of cards. For 2 – 5 players, games last about 25 minutes.

#03 | Balderdash

Balderdash makes the list of board games like Letter Jam because it is a mashup of party liveliness, deduction, bluffing and bringing together information. Instead of taking in clues to form words, you are trying to form words and sell bogus definitions. It definitely hits a different part of the brain but the gameplay and excitement are there.

The game is based on bluffing your opponents into guessing your false definitions to obscure words. The real answers are often even more outrageous than the bluffs, so the game offers plenty of laughs. The Beyond version builds on this with things like movies (make up a plot) and people (say what they did). For 2 – 6 players, games last about 45 minutes.

The Mind Board Game

#02 | The Mind

The Mind makes the list of board games like Letter Jam because it is a collaborative card game where acting on subtle clues is the name of the game. Similar to how everyone needs to collectively use each other’s hand to form words, here players need to take cues on what cards people have to decide how to play cards from their hand in a properly ordered way.

This is more than just a game. It’s an experiment, a journey, a team experience in which you can’t exchange information, yet will become one to defeat all the levels of the game. Round after round, players need to put down all their cards in order collectively without saying anything. The numbers are 1 – 100 and you get some each round. Using math and visual cues, you need to get the job done as a group. For 2 – 4 players, games last about 15 minutes.

Just One Board Game Cards

#01 | Just One

Just One takes the top spot on the list of games like Letter Jam because this is a cooperative party game where little tweaks to communication makes things far more difficult than you would ever imagine. Instead of trying to form words you are delivering them, but if they are not unique enough, they will get canceled out.

Players take turns having to guess a word. Before they do, the card with the word is revealed to the other players and they need to write down a clue to help them get there. It can be anything, but the hook is that duplicate clues get removed. It is more difficult than you think. The goal is to get a score as close to 13 as possible. For 3 – 7 players, games run about 20 minutes each.
