Kenny G Keepin It Saxy Board Game

#05 | Kenny G Keepin it Saxy

Kenny G Keepin it Saxy makes the list of board games like MTV Throwback Music Party Game because it is another game meant to pull at the nostalgia strings that focuses on music (kind of). This is a game that takes its gameplay seriously but laughs at itself keeping things light and letting you and your friends laugh about the times that were the 90s. It has the music backdrop, but ultimately this is a strategy game and has nothing to do with trivia.

Players work together and use the power of jazz to keep Kenny G in the groove. Everyone needs to make sure Kenny stays smooth and saxy through a hectic day. During each round, players will play sound cards to help Kenny overcome uncool events, detangle his luscious locks, and avoid rush hour traffic without missing a brassy beat. For 2 – 5 players, games go for about 30 minutes.

Timeline Music Cinema Board Game

#04 | Timeline: Music & Cinema

Timelines: Music & Cinema makes the list of board games like MTV Throwback Music Party Game because there is not much niche trivia out there that is well done and this happens to be one of the few. It also has the important distinction of not just being questions and answers, what you have to do is more an interactive activity versus knowing the most knowledge. There are many versions of Timeline, this one just happens to be the closest to entertainment culture that MTV brings.

This is a card game played using 110 cards. Each card depicts a historical event on both sides, with the year in which that event occurred on only one side. Players take turns placing a card from their hand in a row on the table. After placing the card, the player reveals the date to check if it was placed in the right spot. Correct and it stays, incorrect and that player draws another. Whoever ditches all cards first wins. For 2 – 8 players, games go for about 15 minutes.

#02 | The Rolling Stone Rock & Roll Party Game

Next to MTV there are not too many very iconic music lifestyle brands out there. The Rolling Stone Rock & Roll Party Game mainly makes the list of games like MTV Throwback Music Party Game because it is one of those brands. It is the same type of game from the same publisher. There is an initial quick fire challenge that gives you an advantage in the “performance” round.

This is a rock & roll music game for anyone who has ever heard a song. You don’t have to be a music buff to win this game; you just need to know the names of some very famous bands and have heard a famous song or two. To start, a player from each team competes in the Music Buzzer Battle. In Round 2 (Triple Charades Jeopardy) players try to get their team to guess the artist by describing them in one of three ways: quoting lyrics, humming or using one word. #01 | Blockbuster

Blockbuster takes the top spot on the list of games like MTV Throwback music party game because it creates everything that game does for music but here it is in film. From the same publisher, it follows the tried and true spirit of being half about bringing you back to the decade we both love and hate, the 90s, and half about serving up group activities that will test your knowledge.

In the opening buzzer battle, both teams are given a topic, such as “Movies with dogs”. You start the 15-second timer, yell out a relevant movie, then whack the buzzer to reset the time. The other team is now in the hot seat and has to do the same. Whoever runs out of time hands the advantage to the other team, which takes control of the next “performance” round that involves guessing based on it being acted it, used in one word, or quoted. For 4 – 6 players, games last 30 – 60 minutes.
