Continue if you are looking for games like Scattergories and are curious about what similar games to play next. “The Game of Scattergories,” published in 1988 by Milton Bradley, is a great game for any group to play. In the game each player fills out a category list ‘with answers that begin with the same letter.’ If no other player matches your answers, you score points. The game is played in rounds. After 3 rounds a winner is declared, and a new game can be begun.

To determine this list we broke down Scattergories to what it is. Scattergories is a party word game that tests your vocabulary. You have to adapt to a situation and try to outthink your opponents instead of them doing the same to you. If you are looking for something similar, you have come to the right place. We took all this into consideration and came up with this list of the 5 board games like Scattergories.

Scrabble Board Game

#05 | Scrabble

Scrabble makes the list of games like Scattergories because it is word game royalty that spans so many areas. In both games you have restrictions and you need to come up with a bunch of words based on those hurdles. Here the limitations of only a few letters and places to play are, however, much more intense and difficult than Scrabble.

You start by drawing 7 letter tiles. Players use these to form words on the gameboard. Each word laid out earns points based on the commonality of the letters used, with certain board spaces giving bonuses. But a word can only be played if it uses at least one already-played tile or adds to an already-played word. The high score wins, simple but devastating. For 2 – 4 players, games run about 90 minutes.

#04 | Taboo

Taboo makes the list of games like Scattergories because it is another fantastic party game that tests your vocabulary under the stress of restrictions. It differs from there as it is not a word game but a guess and answer one. Since both games have similar levels of liveliness and vocab testing, if you have a group that likes one they will most likely be a fan of the other.

Players take turns describing a word or phrase on a drawn card to their partner without using five common additional words or phrases also on the card. The opposing partners watch a timer and use a buzzer to stop the game, buzz the player describing if one of the five off-limits words or phrases is used, or the describing player makes any gestures. For 4 – 10 players, games go for about 20 minutes.

#03 | Just One

Just One makes the list of games like Scattergories because it is another great come up with some specialized words game. This, like Taboo above, is a guessing game based on communication limits put in place, so it is a different experience. Both games give you lots of freedom but still has just enough of a twist to keep things interesting.

Players take turns having to guess a word. Before they do, the card with the word is revealed to the other players and they need to write down a clue to help them get there. It can be anything, but the hook is that duplicate clues get removed. It is more difficult than you think. The goal is to get a score as close to 13 as possible. For 3 – 7 players, games run about 20 minutes each.

Boggle Board Game

#02 | Boggle

Boggle makes the list of games like Scattergories because it has a key game mechanic that is its own thing but brings you to a similar place. At the end of the day, you are still coming up with as many words as possible based on restrictions. In Boggle, your limitations are the letters that fall and where they are. It does have a challenge level that is closer to Scrabble than Boggle, but it taps the same vein.

The game a timed word game in which players have 3 minutes to find as many connected words as possible from the face-up letters resting in a 16 cube grid. When the timer runs out, players compare their lists of words and remove any words found by multiple players. Points are then awarded for remaining words, depending on how many letters are in the word. For 1 – 8 players, games run a quick 10 minutes each.

#01 | Letter Jam

Letter Jam takes the top spot on the list of games like Scattegories because it walks the exact same line of word knowledge game and party. You are still trying to figure out how to fill in the blanks by jumping over hurdles. Players need to provide word-based hints to each other and deduce your scrambled mystery word.

At the start of the game, each player receives a set of face-down letter cards that can be arranged to form an existing word (players selecting words for each other). Throughout the game, other players search each other’s cards to make words. Ultimately you are trying to use clues to figure out your master secret word and the more players that successfully do, the better the victory. For 2 – 6 players, games go for about 45 minutes.
