Though it is about building a city/civilization/village like so many other games, this one feels unique and special. Basically, everyone gets a city grid, you have to form specific patterns by adding resources in order to build structures, those structures do things and at the end, it is a points game. If you are looking for something that is similar, this list is for you. This is the list of 5 games Tiny Towns.

Mexica Board Game

#05 | Mexica

The bottom spot on the list of games like Tiny Towns goes to Mexica. Mexica is similar to Tiny Towns in that it deals with building up a civilization using a non-traditional abstract strategy. Mexica plots the development of the city of Tenochtitlan on an island in Lake Texcoco. Players attempt to partition it into districts, place buildings, and construct canals. Districts are formed by completely surrounding areas of the island with water and then placing a District marker. The player who founds a district scores points immediately. It is very mathematical in how you use the available space.

Dragon Castle Board Game

#04 | Dragon Castle

Dragon castle makes the list more symbolically than anything else. While Tiny Towns is Tetris + Building a Village, Dragon Castle is Majong + Building A Castle. In DC, each turn players grab two tiles from the stack. This allows them to grow their board. They can build these up or make sacrifices for shrines. All you options get you closer to victory points and at the end of the game, whoever has the most wins.

Kings of Artifice Board Game

#03 | Kings of Artifice

Kings of Artifice has all the same core elements of Tiny Towns – Abstract Strategy, Civilization Building and Pattern Building. It is much more of a fantasy world with different stakes, but as you play along, there are similarities going back to these cores throughout. In the building rounds, the players summon their specialized characters to build structures such as Towers and Pastures. In addition to expanding their own kingdoms, the players can use their forces to hinder the progress of their rivals. Be careful though, everything needs to be put together and only score form completed structures.

#02 | Azul

The theme is completely different, going from a quaint village to designing cathedrals for the king. Where it is very similar is these are both puzzle strategy games that rely on abstract strategy and pattern building. In Azul, you draft different color tiles in order to build out your grid and create big clusters that will give you more points. It is all about being in control of your board and how to be crafty when room starts to get sparse. A shakey but meaningful addition to the list of games like Tiny Towns.

Ingenious Board Game Puzzle Piece

#01 | Ingenious

In Ingenious (a.k.a. Einfach Genial), players take turns placing colored domino-style tiles on a game board, scoring for each line of colored symbols that they enlarge. The trick, however, is that a player’s score is equal to their worst-scoring color, not their best, so they need to score for all colors instead of specializing in only one or two. It has absolutely none of thematics, but the core strategy is absolutely there. A slam dunk for the top spot on the list of board games like Tiny Towns.
