October 24, 2020 – As part of a 2021 lineup showcase by publisher Grail Games, one point of interest was the Hibachi board game announcement. In addition to all the details on the game, it was noted that the game is coming to Kickstarter on November 17, 2020.

Have you every been to Benihana? If not, you are missing out. It is a magical chain started by Steve Aoki’s father that utilizes the Japanese Habachi Grill concept of cuisine. They did not invent it, but they certainly made it famous in North America. It is a special treat. It is a bit pricey, but when they make that volcano out of an onion or flip a piece of steak into your mouth from across the room with deadly precision, it is all worth it.

If you have been to Benihana, then you know how great it is and are probably reminiscing about a fun time you had there as you read this. Now take those fond memories and put them into a board game you can take off your shelf and play at any time.

Hibachi is a dexterity game where you are throwing chips on a board like they would on the grill to get the ingredients you need to complete the meal. But it is also a euro game, with action spot and decisions to make. This is a reskinning of the game Safranito from the same designer, Marco Teubner, that originally launched in 2010.

There is also a planned expansion called Hibachi: Hot & Spicy.

Official Game Description:

Throw the egg! Grab the pepper! Being a teppanyaki chef over a hot hibachi grill sure looks entertaining — but could you be one?

In Hibachi, players are Japanese teppanyaki chefs who must use their hibachi grill to please hungry customers. To do this, players take turns each round throwing discs (poker chips) onto the board. Where the chips land determines which ingredients the chefs can buy or sell and which special actions they might be able to take. One at a time, the locations on the board are resolved as the chips are turned over to show their hidden values.

You must collect the correct ingredients to cook the required dishes, and if you’re the first to complete three orders from customers, you win!
