October 20, 2021 – Two different How The Grinch Stole Christmas Board Games from Funko games are coming out soon. “Dr. Seuss Merry Grinchmas! Game” and “Dr. Seuss Grow Your Heart Card Game” will both start shipping at the end of October, just in time for the holiday season. Both are available for preorder now with the former being available only at Target and the latter being available on Amazon.

The games are inspired by the holiday title How the Grinch Stole Christmas which was originally released in 1966 as a tv movie. The quick 26-minute animated film has played over and over every holiday season since and is up there in the top Christmas classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story and Charlie Brown Christmas.

ABOUT DR. SEUSS GROW YOUR HEART CARD GAME

It’s Christmas in Who-ville! What trimmings will you choose? Oh no—the Grinch is taking the presents, the feast, and even the tree! But when the Whos celebrate anyway, the Grinch’s heart grows three sizes. Take turns playing as the Whos or the Grinch. Draw cards and choose which Christmas goodies to keep. The Grinch steals cards away to improve his score, but each turn his heart grows! Collect sets and then score your cards to try to get the most points!

MSRP $6.99, Ages 6+, 3-6 Players, 30-minute gameplay

This game joins their gift-wrapped, holiday classic set that they kicked off last year around the same time. Other games in this small box card game set include titles based on: Elf, Gremlins, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Frosty the Snowman and A Christmas Story. They are all fairly different and just supposed to be a nice and easy encapsulation of that particular property. Something to play with friends or family that bring back that nostalgia and togetherness you feel during the holidays. A How The Grinch Stole Christmas card game absolutely makes sense as an addition to this set.

There have been a few other board games based on The Grinch, but none of them really took off. There was How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Game in 1997, Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas Game: Movie Edition in 2000, The Grinch: Sing Your Heart Out! in 2007 and The Grinch Christmas Bingo Game in 2009. There were also a few movie adaptions that were not quite as believed. There was a live-action version starring Jim Carey in 2000 and a more modern computer-animated version starring Benedict Cumberbatch in 2018.

Funko broke into board games with their pop dolls board game “Funkoverse” in 2019 and has aggressively been expanding into board games ever since. Their specialty has been leveraging their film and tv licenses (which you can clearly see here) and so far the results have been good. They have board games that utilize the brands of: The Goonies, Fast & The Furious, ESPN, Groundhog Day, Disney Princesses, The Warriors, The Rocketeer, Five Nights at Freddy’s and so many more.

Their holiday collection appears to have been successful last year, so them putting out more for this year is a good signal that maybe more holiday favorites will be coming soon from the collectibles and entertainment company.
