MTV, The Throwback Music Party Game, based on the iconic network, is for music lovers of the 80s, 90s and beyond (but don’t worry, as long as you’ve heard of a few artists from these years you’ll be fine!). Open the throwback boombox, flip open the cassette player game board, and split into two teams.

The object of the game is to be the first team to collect at least one Artist Card from all eight music categories: The Brits, Award-Winning Videos, Best of Unplugged, Pop Anthems, Hip Hop Hits, Headbangers, Teenage Angst and Queens of MTV. This is done through an initial quick fire challenge that has you listing songs back and forth until someone survives. This gives them an advantage heading into the artist round where teams need to convey band names by either performing, providing a word word clue or quoting lyrics.

Time Needed: Approximately 25 – 45 minutes.

This is a step by step guide for how to play MTV Throwback Music Party Game the popular music trivia activities and nostalgia machine. Additional notions and special rules can be found below the list. These will be referenced for your convenience.

1. SETUP | Put Out Board, Cards & Buzzer
To kicks off how to play MTV Throwback Music Party Game setup, put out all the communal assets that will be used through the game. This includes the (1) gameboard, (2) red buzzer, (3) head to head cards face down and (4) artist cards face down.

2. SETUP | Divide Teams & Choose Active Player
Regardless of how many players you have, split into two different teams. You need at least 2 per team and can comfortably go to around 5 or 6 with no issue. Someone has to kick things off on each team with the quickfire challenge (think Family Fued) so figure that out.

3. GAMEPLAY | Buzzer Quick Fire Challenge
Kicking off how to play MTV Throwback Music Party Game gameplay, one player per team (and no one else) faces off in the initial buzzer challenge. The two players stand over the red buzzer getting ready to hit it. A “Head to Head” card is flipped listing a song category like “songs with love”. The player the buzzes first gets to list a song that qualifies. If they are correct, the other player has a chance to add (15 seconds). If they are correct, this continues to go back and forth, but once someone is wrong, they lose. The winner gets a card advantage in the main round for the turn that is coming up.

4. GAMEPLAY | Artist Round | Card Choice
The representative from the team that won the quickfire challenge draws 9 random artist cards from the central, face-down stack. Each card will have a band or artist name on them and the genre they belong to on the back. Of those 9, this player gets to remove 3 and give the reaming 6 to the other team representative. That other representative chooses 3 cards from the 6 and the original passer takes the remaining 3. Because you need to get cards from 8 different genres to win, by having this control of being able to remove 3 and set the 6 that both teams will choose from, you have a great deal of power. This is why you want to win the opener each time.

5. GAMEPLAY | Artist Round | Performace
Now that each rep from each team has their 3 cards, they will need to perform these to the rest of their team to try to win that particular card. The rep gets to choose one of three categories for each card. The three options, with you having to take one of each, are – (1) perform them somehow, (2) give a word word clue to describe them or (3) quote their lyrics. Both teams get a chance to do this and take turns to see how many of the three can be gotten.

6. GAMEPLAY | Repeat Until Game End
After the performance round is over, each team chooses a new representative and you start all over again. This continues as many rounds as necessary until the game ends. If you go through your whole team and need another representative, start back at the top of your order.

7. WINNING | Get A Card For Each Genre
The first team to enter the Buzzer Round with an Artist Card from all eight categories wins the game. There is not much to how to play MTV Throwback Music Party Game, you just need to know your music.

At the end of every artist round, teams can discard three cards from the same genre and steal one from their rival’s collection. Each team is allowed to do this once per turn.
