March 2, 2021 – The previous announced epic fantasy franchise film has some new high-profile additions. Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis will star In the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film. The two actors join an all-star cast that also includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page.
This film is not coming out anytime soon but it is good to hear that things are moving forward. The last Dungeons & Dragons theatrical movie attempt was back in 2000 with a film starring Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans. It was a disappointment, to say the least. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 10%, “critics say this movie has a cheap look and is badly directed.”
Plot details for the new film remain thin. According to Deadline, who first reported the story, they hear Hugh Grant will be playing the villain. It is not clear who Sophia Lillis, of the widely popular IT franchise, will be in the new film. Lillis is making a name for herself, she was also recently seen in the Amazon pic Uncle Frank as well as her Netflix series I Am Not Okay With This.
Hasbro, who owns the Dungeon & Dragons franchise IP, owns movie studio Entertainment One. Paramount and eOne are jointly producing and financing the pic, with eOne distributing in the UK and Canada and Paramount in the rest of world.
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Vacation, Game Night) will direct and write the script. Jeremy Latcham is producing through his deal with studio eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment arm. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner is also producing.
